As part of the “Conversations” circuit at Designer’s Days, Didier Faustino is installing “Interzone” in the windows of Lafayette Maison with Doppelgänger, a piece produced for the occasion.

A white mask separates into two. Its conjoined parts fuse together recreating a sort of prosthesis for a mirror kiss.

The double entry mask pivots the heads of those who put it on, defining the minimum limits, an immaterial border becoming real.

Doppelgänger seems to prevent contact and yet it reveals a link, the meeting of the mouths which slot into one another through a perfectly traced, proportioned orifice.

Like a hygienist mask maintained in equilibrium, Doppelgänger appears to be like a prosthesis which controls the kiss.

Doppelgänger forces the tête-à-tête to feel the other, to let them slip into their inner world, with the risk of meeting their alter ego and losing themselves within it.

Artist Nils Völker has figured out how to make them into cool interactive breathing art. “One Hundred and Eight is an interactive wall-mounted Installation mainly made out of ordinary garbage bags. Controlled by a microcontroller each of them is selectively inflated and deflated in turn by two cooling fans.”

Ephemicropolis 2010

Check out this obsessive work constructed with 100,000 staples by UK artist and designer Peter Root.

Stacks of staples were broken into varying sizes from full stacks about 12cm high down to single staples. These stacks were then stood up and arranged over a period of 40 hours.

The new Puma shoe box design by Yves Béhar has been three years in the making and I think it’s a great idea and a step in the right direction. The outer bag is made from recycled PET but it’s unclear if it’s recyclable and I don’t think this design qualifies for Cradle to Cradle certification but it’s great to see Puma is taking an interest in new ways to package products, thus reducing waste and inefficiency in producing packaging. I would like to know how the shoes are going to be shipped. The advantage of the shoe box is it’s ability to withstand pressure when  stacked and boxed for shipping long distances. If the cardboard interior of the new packaging can withstand the same pressure as an original shoe box design, while cutting down on waste and cost, then this design will go far but if this is just for show on the consumer side and it’s actually shipped inside a shoe box to the stores, then Houston, we have a problem.
