It’s A Cliffhanger

San Francisco is still a very provincial city when it comes to architecture but University of California’s recently opened ‘Ray and Dagmar Dolby Regeneration Medicine Building’, designed by firm Rafael Vinoly architects, seems to have made it past the nimby approval apparatus with a very “edgy” design.

“The building’s location on a steeply sloping hillside – in a city plagued by earthquakes – was a defining element in its construction. The architects’ circuitous use of stairways and sloping walkways has deftly resolved the former, maximising all available space and ensuring a fluid and cohesive whole. Meanwhile, the entire complex is also supported by steel space trusses and concrete piers, which are specifically engineered to absorb earthquakes through seismic base isolation. ”

Robbie Augspurger’s Hot Mess Hipster Head Shots

Portland Oregon photographer Robbie Augspurger’s series of head shots remind me of those awkward high school photos that no one ever wants to see again. The outfits and hair styles in these shots, do resemble the hipster hot mess retro styles often seen in the Mission district of San Francisco, except the phones aren’t as cool.

Smash-Up Derby

“Slow Motion Car Crash” installation from  Jonathan Schipper.

Madness and a Winchester

Back in 2005 I saw the Jeremy Blake video installation at SFMOMA titled “Winchester” inspired by the Winchester Mystery House in San Jose, CA. I think about the installation every time I drive through San Jose and I recently came across an article about the suicides of Jeremy Blake and his girlfriend, Theresa Duncan, in Newsweek. Both stories of Sarah Winchester and Jeremy Blake are very sad and haunting. Jeremy Blake’s story is apparently being turned into a film by Lions Gate and Gus Van Sant has signed on as a consultant to the film. Check out Jeremy Blake’s “Century 21″ video that was part of the SFMOMA “Winchester” installation.

I’d Love to Do Your Nails, Before Someone Gets Hurt

Tiga’s new video for “Shoes” directed by Alex and Liane. It’s as if the directors were channeling Stanley Kubrick from his Clockwork Orange days and imagining his version of a 70s talk show.
